Why these Calgarians are making an Alberta-based Filipino-Canadian TV show
November 6, 2021 By Karina Zapata for CBC Calgary "Two Filipinas from Calgary say they're sick of seeing how Alberta and Filipinos are depicted in popular TV sitcoms — so they decided to create their own show. Informed by a series of 10 creative co-lab sessions to help them better understand what it means to be Filipino in Alberta, Karla Villanueva Danan and Sheena Manabat are in the process of developing a distinctly Filipino-Canadian TV show based in the province. The project is supported by a grant from the Canada Council of the Arts." |
[WATCH] #KeepCarloInCanada: Stopping the deportation of a Filipino frontliner
September 27, 2021 By Michelle Abad for Rappler "Your government is trying to deport a COVID-19 medical frontline worker in the middle of the pandemic. Will you let them get away with it? But not so fast – fellow Filipinos Monica de Vera and Karla Villanueva Danan, who did not even know Carlo before his case was publicized by the media, started an online campaign called #KeepCarloInCanada. The campaign led to thousands lobbying to let the Filipino immigrant stay." |

#ProudlyAsianCanadian Photo Essay
May 14, 2018 By Karla Villanueva Danan for CBC Karla's reflections on being Filipina/x-Canadian (excerpt): Born and raised in the Prairies, I grew up trying to look “all-Canadian”: staying up-to-date on the latest Calgary Flames trade deadline moves, finding the right cowboy chic outfit for the Stampede and pretending to enjoy Alberta beef. I wasn’t born in the Philippines, but the blood in my veins is fiercely Pinay and my golden brown skin yearns for the Pacific sun. In hindsight, I was a lot happier spending my time munching on merienda (afternoon snack) with my Nanay (what I affectionately called my grandmother) and kicking it in my tsinelas (house slippers), rather than trying to be perfectly “all-Canadian.” Click here for the full photo essay.
